GERTY has been teaching Salsa and Latin dance in Rotorua for more than 10 years. In the last 2 years, she has been focused on teaching Cuban Salsa, Rueda de Casino and Bachata.
Her aim is to teach dance students the skills needed to have fun, and to social dance well, with confidence, good technique, and style.
Gerty and Julio are bringing us a Rueda De Son Bootcamp on 23 November as an exciting prelude to Salsa Tumbao.
Rueda on the contratiempo - elegant and fun! For dancers at every level.
Add a live demo at the Saturday night party and she's got you hooked. Don't miss it!
We spoke to Gerty about her drive to dance.
What is your dream car - and why?
"A red one – they go faster… but I’ll settle for any car that safely gets you from A to B"
What drives you to dance?
"For me, it’s the simultaneous connection with a dance partner and the music. The ability to communicate without words, being present in the moment, and the feeling of happiness. Sometimes, dancing even makes you feel like you are flying.
So much fun and as an extra bonus, dancing keeps you fit too!"
Partner dancing has been a life-long passion for Gerty because of the connection it creates between people, and the ability to communicate without words.
She loves the challenge to express the music and simultaneously get an understanding of how a dance partner is interpreting the music.
What do you feel after an amazing evening of dance with great people?
"After an amazing dance event, I am on a natural high from the shared fun, good vibes and music.
I feel energised, and buzzing. An experience that makes you go home with a big smile on your face."
Gerty's dance journey, over the years, has taken her to Ballet, Dance sport, Linear Salsa On 1, Zouk, Samba de Gafieira, Urban Kiz, Cuban-Salsa, Afro-Cuban, Rumba, Son, and Linear Salsa On 2.
Gerty has loved every step on the way!
You have five words - how do you convince someone to start dancing?
"Fun, connection, music, fitness, friendships"
Earlier this year, she also had the pleasure to choreograph a Rueda de Casino performance for the Salsa 'n Latin Dance Rotorua students. The performance in Rotorua, gave the students a great opportunity to experience the excitement of performing in front of an audience.
Salsa 'n Latin Dance Rotorua run regular classes on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 pm at the Lynmore Scouts Hall in Rotorua
