A FACE out of New Zealand dance history - Julio had returned after a sabbatical and is ready to bring us some fun and spice in the Cubaton Workshop on Sunday and a fun funky beginners Rueda with 'Los Caballeros' (Eugenio; Adi; y Julio) on Saturday.
We chatted to him about his Latin dance career and what drives him to dance.
What is your dream car and why?
"A classic BMW."
Featured on TV, stage, nationwide and congress teaching tours and the NZ History of Dance. Winner of multiple National and Australasian championship titles across different dance forms (latin/swing/modern jive)
Julio is one of NZ's most senior exponents of Latin dance, the teacher of teachers and dancers in Auckland, and NZ's first Salsa champion.
What drives you to dance?
"I consider myself a movement specialist. I love the study of human form and movement - anything from acrobatics to mobility to dance. I enjoy taking myself from one movement state to another"
Julio was instrumental in teaching and evangelising linear Salsa and Rueda de Casino in NZ in the 1990s.
What do you feel after an amazing evening of dance with great people?
"Content."
Teacher and practitioner of many movement forms, including fitness, acrobatics, multiple dance forms (Salsa on1/Contra tiempo, Cuban Cha Cha, Argentine Tango Fantasia, Son/Bolero, Samba and Therapeutics (Thai Yoga/Flying Therapeutics).
You have five words - how do you convince someone to start dancing?
"It's a great way for introverts to socialise."
